Term 1 Art Excursions

Top Designs 2018 Exhibition Art Excursion

On Tuesday the 20th March, VCE VCD Unit 1&3 students visited the Melbourne Museum in Carlton to view the Top Designs 2018 exhibition. This annual exhibition is celebrating the remarkably creative and innovative work of Victoria’s most exceptional VCE Visual Communication & Designs students from various secondary schools in Victoria. This visit hugely inspires all VCD students to get many design ideas that they could adapt in their own folio development.

Counihan Moreland Council Gallery Art Excursion

On Friday the 23rd March, VCE Studio Arts Unit 1 students attended an Educational programme: Women in the Arts - Creativity, Collaboration and Connection. It was an invitation only workshop that was organised by Counihan Moreland Council Gallery in Brunswick. This particular programme focused on career paths as women artists, curators and art –related workers in Australia. Students were given with an opportunity to have an open discussion with three PhD students/artists from VCA to enrich their knowledge in Art industries.

A Message from the Career Department

Term 1 has flown by for the Career Development Department, and already we’re seeing some wonderful stories start to emerge about our students succeeding in constructing a successful future. IDC Year 10s are starting to secure some excellent positions for their Term 2 mandatory Work Experience placements (highly advised to undertake for all other campuses!), a student at KBC is about to start volunteer work at the Country Fire Authority, we have a MFC student who will be venturing to New Zealand with the UN Youth Australia organisation, and we have an EMC student who has started to create a professional network in the writing & publishing industry all because she followed her passions on social media! There are good things happening on all of our campuses, and we want this to continue.

Term 1 saw the introduction of dedicated Career Development sessions for Years 11 & 12 students. These sessions give the Career Development staff an opportunity to not only talk to our students about post-school thinking like TAFE and university, but also about other related issues such as the future world of work, the current shape of the labour market, the breadth of possibilities that lay beyond Year 12, and the importance of developing enterprise (soft) skills. In Term 2, Year 12 will start to have visits from selected universities, talking about their options for next year, in a lead up to the 2018 VTAC application process, which begins this year on August 6.

Term 1 also saw the first time that Sirius College hosted a regional Career Development network meeting (shown in the associated photo). Held at our Eastmeadows campus, this gathering of over 40 representatives of schools in the North West of Melbourne, along with all Victorian universities, as well as number of TAFEs and industry groups, shows that the Career Development Department of Sirius College is building credibility within the tertiary education sector. Ms. Whitworth (KBC Career Development Counsellor) is an active member of the Dandenong regional Career Development network as well, and as such all our Department members’ participation in these networks brings nothing but opportunities for growth to all of our students!

Finally, another reminder about the primary ‘mouthpiece’ for the Career Development Department: the News Feed on siriuscollegecareers.com. With close to 250 subscribers at the time of writing this article, the News Feed is the daily source for news, information & opportunities from the Career Development Department for students, parents & the Sirius College community (including our weekly Career Development newsletter, which is produced each Wednesday). It’s a free service to subscribe to – all you need is an eMail address. Doing this ensures that you never miss any chance to support your son/daughter’s career aspirations, and already we’ve had a number of students act on some of the opportunities presented through the News Feed, which is fantastic to see. The Career Development Department strongly encourages you & your child/children to subscribe to this free service.
